The Postdoctoral Fellow will examine how tropical variability will change under greenhouse warming, what are the mechanisms for interactions between extreme positive Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) and extreme El Niño, and how it may respond to greenhouse warming.

  • PhD or equivalent in climate sciences and mathematics, or equivalent, such as Meteorology and Oceanography.

  • Well-developed knowledge of ENSO or the IOD dynamics, their respective feedback processes, their interactions.

  • Demonstrated strong ability in writing computer programs and in data analysis method/approach and techniques.

  • Demonstrated excellent oral and written communication skills.

  • The ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary, regionally dispersed research team, plus the motivation and discipline to carry out autonomous research.

  • A record of science innovation and creativity, plus the ability & willingness to incorporate novel ideas and approaches into scientific investigations.

Job/Position Description-

  • Lead the effort that addresses how the annual cycle and long-term mean state of the equatorial Indo-Pacific will change under global warming.

  • Use physical mathematical equations to examine the impact of mean state and annual cycle change on tropical variability properties, in particular, whether there is physical mathematical evidence that the mean state change will lead to more extreme positive Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) and El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) events, and whether there is a linkage for their changes.

  • Use outputs from about 40 climate models participating in the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change to test the result from the theoretical framework described above, and examine if there is a systematic relationship between mean state changes in the equatorial Indo-Pacific and changes in occurrences of extreme Indian Ocean Dipole and ENSO events, and  how their interaction may change.

  • Conduct mechanistic experiments using the Australian Community Climate and Earth-System Simulator climate model, to validate any aspect of the results.
